How to Pass a UKVI Credibility Interview in 2026

In 2026, more Nigerian applicants are being called for a UKVI credibility interview. It is usually 10–30 minutes, often by video. The officer is checking whether you are a genuine student.

Vague answers lose visas. Specific answers win them. Prepare these four areas.

UKVI on course modules

UKVI on course modules

“It is a good course at a good university” is not an answer.

Know, without notes:

• Exact course title, level and start date
• How it is taught and assessed
• 3–5 modules by name, and what one or two actually cover
• Why this course beats a similar one in Nigeria or at another UK university

Say this kind of thing:
“My MSc includes Statistical Modelling and Machine Learning Applications. I need those for a senior analyst role. The industry project is what I cannot get on a similar course at home.”

UKVI on career link

Show why this degree is the next step, not a random upgrade.

Be ready to explain:

• What you studied or did before
• The job you want in Nigeria
• Which modules map to that job
• Why you need the course now
• Why a local degree is not enough

Mention the Graduate Route only as short, relevant experience, not as the reason you chose the UK.

If you have a study gap or a second master’s, explain it. Hiding it is worse.

UKVI on funding

Know the numbers on your CAS and bank documents:

• Tuition and deposit already paid
• Maintenance amount for your city
• Who is paying, what they do, and where the money came from

Part-time work is not your funding plan. You may work up to 20 hours in term time. Fees and living costs must already be covered.

If a large sum appeared recently, explain it the same way your documents explain it.

UKVI on home ties

The officer must believe study is the purpose of the visa.

Useful, honest ties:

• Family and professional network in Nigeria
• A role this degree improves at home
• Property, business or responsibilities waiting

Say this kind of thing:
“After graduation I may use any post-study work time for experience, then return to [role] in Lagos. That is where the career payoff is for this qualification.”

Never say you will overstay or work full-time from week one.

Answers that fail a UKVI interview

• “My agent chose the school.”
• “I will work to pay the rest of my fees.”
• “I want to stay in the UK permanently.”
• “I don’t remember the modules.”
• A sponsor story that does not match the bank statements

One-sentence test

Say this out loud before the interview:

“I am studying [course] at [university] because modules [A] and [B] will help me do [job] in Nigeria, and my [sponsor] is paying [amount] from [source].”

If that is true and matches your file, you are ready.

Confirm current maintenance figures on GOV.UK before you apply.
