Study Abroad FAQ: Studying LAW In The UK?
Dear TGM Student,
I know you would not be thinking about studying in the UK for your LLM degree if it does not agree with your academic and career goals. Let’s be honest, you are most likely looking for schools that offer either of these;
- 1. A better & improved learning environment that is better than what Nigerian Law schools have.
- 2. Internship opportunities so as to apply your class-based learning into a professional legal environment.
- 3. Part-Time Opportunities during your study program for financial support.
- 4. Post-Study Work Permit so as to extend your stay in the country.
- 5. Affordable Tuition fee and payment plan.
Well, the United Kingdom actually ticks all these boxes and will offer more and here is why;
INTERNATIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCE
The UK is one of the world’s most popular destinations if applying for either your Bachelors, Masters or Doctorate degree in Law with over 400,000 students admitted on a yearly basis for they perform well in rankings, research, academia and student’s preparedness for the Labour Market.
Trust me, lecturers are not boring, and you won’t be pressured to cram and pour the whole coursework during exams. This is because your physical and mental alertness is required throughout the whole study program. You can read our first article about Legal Studies in the UK here
INTERNSHIP PLACEMENTS & PART-TIME JOBS
Our partner UK schools go the extra mile to establish profitable relationships with companies offering students 6 – 12 months internship experience attached to their study program. Here is a list of Legal related courses that offer better chances of internships:
- 1. Finance, Commercial, Tax or Trade Law.
- 2. Oil & Gas or Energy Law
- 3. Construction Law
- 4. Environmental Law
- 5. Corporate or Employment Law
- 6. Human Rights Or Social Welfare Law
- 7. Immigration & Asylum Law
- 8. Insurance Law
- 9. Intellectual Property Law
- 10. Entertainment Law
- 11. Shipping Law
- 12. Clinical Negligence Law
The school’s career service department is saddled with the responsibility of counselling and supervising students applications to companies for part-time and paid internship opportunities. Yes, some internship opportunities and part-time jobs are paid. In a simple calculation, the minimum wage per hour is 10 Pounds, which students will be permitted 20 hours per week and that sums up to 800 per month. This should cover your basic living expense if you are not a spendthrift.
However, we both know that you still have to do the work of at least notifying the school of your career goals so as to properly monitor your growth. Remember, you only get what you ask for.
POST-STUDY WORK PERMIT
I know you were waiting on this part too. There was a press release, in the first half of this year, stating the UK governments plans of reinstalling the PSW policy so as to offer incoming international students opportunities for a robust work portfolio and maintain the country’s commercial activity.
Yes, this is true and many of our students applying for September 2020 and January 2021 are guaranteed the PSW opportunity. A good addition will be for those applying for the 18-24 months study program at the Masters level.
AFFORDABLE TUITION FEE & PAYMENT PLAN
The tuition fee for each school differs with the school’s location, degree program you are applying for and its time duration. You can contact us to request a financial quote of how much it will cost you as a student.
