The Perfect Pre-Departure Checklist For International Students
If you’re going abroad to pursue an international degree in a university or to start an exciting new profession via the work visa route, trust me travelling overseas may be a complex process with many moving pieces.
Not to worry, before you bid bye-bye to your home country (Nigeria) and leave for obodoyibo, there are a lot of things you need to consider as you’re going there to study and not for a holiday.
Speak with a TGM Education counsellor today and get your travel plans sorted.
Here is a list of the things you will need, put them on a checklist and start ticking them off as you prepare for your study abroad journey:
1. Be Organized
While preparing to get yourself out of the country, remember that you need to keep copies of all your related documents in one folder, and ensure you keep them in your hand luggage for easy accessibility. Essential documents like;
- – Your International passport / Visa
- – Flight ticket
- – Accommodation proof
- – Admission proof / CAS (Confirmation of Admission to Studies)
- – Letter of enrolment
- – Health insurance proof
- – Scholarship documents (if any)
- – Tuition deposit slip
- – Proof of your financial support/cash/traveller checks, e.t.c.
Keep one set of prints with yourself and one set of copies back at home (Nigeria).
2. Health Check-Up
Due to the stress of getting everything on track, you might need to do a full medical check-up before you travel to avoid falling sick the first week you get to your destination.
3. Some Medications
Medicines are always an essential part of your luggage that you should never forget. You may never know certain medicines may be a little expensive in the country you wish to study, and some medications might be unavailable too.
Stay on the safe side and pack a surplus amount of necessary medicines i.e. body pain, toothache, vomiting, anti-malaria, cold, indigestion, stomach pain drugs, etc.
4. Clothes
When it comes to clothing, it is always advisable to research the weather of the country you are going to study in, take a few extra pairs of clothes with you as finding a laundry or washing them will be difficult till you settle down, also take clothes for different weather and seasons for your time abroad.
If you have a clear idea about the weather of the place you are travelling to, it is still advised to take 50% of the clothes and buy other stuff when you get there.
5. Electronics Gadgets
Remember to pack your electronic gadgets i.e. laptop, tablet or phone or whatever you need that can help you succeed academically.
When packing, put electronics that can function internationally in your luggage, and don’t forget to grab a couple of adaptors too.
6. Local Currency
Most students carry about $1000 in currency and the rest can be taken in loaded forex cards. Carry some loose change for calling, transporting and eating/drinking during travelling. The rest of your tuition can be wired directly to your university.
7. Miscellaneous Items
Extras like dairy, hangers, sunglasses, bed sheets, passport-size photographs, linens, kitchen towels, bath towels, sleeping bags, air pillows, and stationery items like pens, pencils, and markers along with other necessary stuff that you might feel to take.
