The New UK Immigration Changes You Need To Know
The UK Home Office is to stop students from bringing their family members to the UK in a bid to curb migration.
The changes will come into effect for students starting their courses in January 2024 and will apply to all international students, including those from the European Union.
Under the current rules, the main applicants can bring their spouse or civil partner and children under the age of 18 to the UK with them.
However, the new rules will no longer be able to bring dependants with them unless they are on postgraduate courses that are currently designated as research programmes. This also removes the ability for international students to switch from a student visa to a work visa before their studies have been completed.
The Home Office said the changes were necessary to “ensure that the UK’s immigration system is fair and works in the best interests of the British people”.
The changes have been met with criticism from some quarters, with arguments that they will make it more difficult for international students to study in the UK.
The new rules are part of a wider government effort to reduce net migration to the UK. In 2022, net migration to the UK stood at 273,000, down from 332,000 in 2021.
The government has set a target of reducing net migration to below 100,000 by 2025.
Here are some of the key points of the new rules:
- – Students will no longer be able to bring their dependents to the UK.
- – The new rule will remove the ability for international students to switch from a student visa to a work visa before their studies have been completed.
- – The changes will come into effect for students starting their courses in January 2024.
- – The changes are part of a wider government effort to reduce net migration to the UK.
(The new rules have been met with criticism from some quarters, with some arguing that they will make it more difficult for international students to study in the UK.
However, the Home Office said the changes would not affect the number of international students coming to the UK, as they would still be able to bring their spouse or civil partner with them).
