How Google and Apple are Controlling The Spread of COVID-19
It is no news that the rapid spread of the Coronavirus was an unexpected visit and has affected major sectors such as the teaching and educational institutions, sales and commerce, people’s income flow and student’s plan of leaving Nigeria. As at today, COVID-19 confirmed cases in Nigeria has risen to over 29,000 cases and over 600 dead patients recorded.
The country’s defence mechanism is solely dependent on the Public Health Sector and its workers (that is Nurses, Doctors, Laboratory Scientist, Biochemist, etc). Some Public Health companies like Life Bank, Doctors for Africa, Flying Doctors, Redbank, HMOs, have taken bold steps to control its spread proffering solutions like Quip, Mobile Testing Centres, etc.
Moreso, tech companies such as Google and Apple have a step further will updating their user’s setting tracking feature on their mobile devices. This was a recent update released in May which was the same time when the lockdown was eased in commercial cities both in and out of Nigeria.
This feature can be seen on the android phone’s settings tab, when activated users are notified in real-time of likely exposure to COVID-19 within their physical space. It randomly generates changing IDs based on location and periodically checks other IDs to confirm if there is any infected person. For this to work, an infected person should share their IDs so as to aptly inform all so as not to affect others. According to a disclaimer, this is only possible when public health authorities grant access.
Countries like India make it compulsory for residents to register their IDs on this application, others like Nigeria are not fully open to this system. At present, there are no mobile apps available for the country and 2 disabled apps on IOS Store.
This most definitely shows that Nigerians and the Nigerian Health sector has a lot of work to do. The Public Health sector & Health workers will need help from other departments like Data Science, Cyber Security, Software Engineering, UX Designs, Computer Science and build a better-improved system of treating patients in future events.
